Understand Google Review Snippets to Optimize Your SEO

Running a business is never an easy venture. Not only is the business itself a huge mountain to climb but understanding the ins and outs of building your presence online is a whole different beast. As SEO continues to evolve, so do the ways in which you can employ it. Online reviews are something every business should be interested in.

Now you can use the review feature within Google SERPs to optimize your business' online efforts.

Over the past several years, Google has made multiple changes to the way we see search results. However, these changes are not always made so clear and could have a major effect on companies or individuals looking to optimize your SEO efforts.

Build Your SEO Foundation

Think of these changes as small cracks in the foundation of a building. While one may not have any noticeable effect, over time more and more small cracks will ultimately lead to damage to the building. That's how Google updates can affect your SEO. One change may not hurt your rankings but multiple updates without evolving with them can lead to a dreaded Google penalty.

When Google decides to update its algorithms, it's important to jump in front of your competition and make the necessary changes as soon as possible.

As recently as last month, Google implemented a major change to their algorithm with the Penguin 4.0 update. The Penguin 4.0 update from Google now shows the updates in your search rankings in real time.

Rich Snippets and Reviews

In 2009, during their Searchology conference, Google introduced one of their newest ideas – rich snippets. Rich snippets are additional details regarding specific pages in the search results. Ever wonder why people started seeing reviews for their products directly in the SERP? Well, this is the exact reason why!

A review is simply a person's evaluation of something. For Google, this can apply to several things, including a business's specific domain or a certain product of theirs. Google displays two separate forms of reviews when it comes to rich snippets. The two different types of reviews in Google's search results pages are critics' reviews and review snippets.

Review snippets are generally an average of all of the combined rating scores from reviewers. This allows you to gauge how your product or business is viewed within a larger audience range. Not only will Google show you text to go along with the review, but it will also be represented on a numerical scale such as 1-5 or 1-10.

Review snippets are available for local businesses, movies, books, music and various other products. These review snippets will appear in Google search results  either under the given search or in the Google Knowledge cards.

Restaurant Snippet Reviews

Critic reviews differ from review snippets in that they offer a more in-depth look at the thoughts of one specific reviewer. These types of reviews can help you get a better understanding of how certain individuals feel about your business or product rather than a more general insight that can be seen in review snippets.

With critic reviews being so prominently displayed in the search results, users will be able to get a quick summary of the review directly under your domain's knowledge graph. Critic reviews are displayed in local businesses, movies and books.

Critic reviews

There are many reasons why reviews on your website can increase your SEO optimization efforts within Google. One is that it allows your site to catch the eye of a user. Reviews are an instinctive, eye-catching part of a business or product. People want to know ahead of time what to expect in terms of quality.

Users who see that a business is receiving lots of reviews may be more inclined to click on the domain to learn more about the business.

Increasing Your Website's CTR

Not only can reviews bring more eyes to your domain but this fact can lead to an increase in your sites click-through rate (CTR). If users are curious about the reviews of your business they are more likely to click on your domain to find further information about your business and products.

An increase in your website's CTR can go as far as to increase the conversions you are experiencing. With a higher CTR and more conversions comes an increase in your sites ranking and SEO within Google.

Having reviews dedicated to your website can give users a better opportunity in finding your domain when they use Google search. With the chance of an increase in search opportunity results, your domain's rankings could also see an increase.

Any increase in your website's rankings can do wonders for optimizing your SEO. While Google ranking may not be the only factor in improving your SEO, it still plays an important part and reviews can help you in your journey up the Google ranks.

Nearly 90% of customers say that they are highly influenced by online reviews within Google search (marketingland.com). With this knowledge, you can see how reviews can play a part in a website's SEO optimization. Product page visitors who read and interact with Google reviews convert at a 58 percent higher rate than those who did not have this same interaction.

Users who were shown to read and interact with product reviews reflected an increase of 62 percent in revenue per visit. Similarly, the average order value also increased when shoppers are engaged with reviews. The average order value increases by 3 percent when users are engaged. This shows just how much of an impact having reviews linked to your domain can help with the increase and improvement of your SEO optimization.

Review Snippets can ultimately end up factoring into where your domain is ranking in Google search. Among search results that include review snippets, 10% are ranking in the first position in Google, 7% are ranking in the second position and 6% are ranking in the third.

5d11a93f7fd1cc8352344b1b13527acd.png

Some domains have as much as 50 percent of their ranked keywords coming from review snippet results. For example, medicalnewstoday.com receives 48.71% of all of its ranked organic keywords from users using review snippets.

Having such a large number of organic keywords coming from review shows just how important of a role it can have on SEO.

98380c0227c41a3c996992e00a058e96.png

The percent of organic keywords coming from review snippets can vary depending on the category of the industry as a whole. As seen here, 70 percent of organic keywords for allrecipes.com are being generated through review snippets, while 66 percent of organic keywords for foodnetwork.com are also generated through review.

Different categories generally vary in the percentage of organic keywords being generated by review snippets. The food industry has two separate websites that have over 50 percent of the organic keywords being generated from the Google review snippet.

Monitor Your Review Snippets

SEMrush can help you monitor your review snippets and help determine which keywords are being tunneled through review snippets. SEMrush allows you to view your SERP review percentage under the organic research tool.

With the review snippet feature in SEMrush, you can view your domain's keywords in one place that also have review snippet. Keeping track of this data will help you in analyzing the benefits of review snippets in relation to your SEO.

SEMrush SERP features

Reviews are continuing to play a bigger role in how they affect one's SEO efforts. SEMrush allows you to monitor the keywords that are affected all in one place so you are ensuring that you never fall behind on your SEO efforts.

4 Tips To Make Your Website More SEO Friendly

Website SEO Friendly Search Engine Optimization Keywords Site Navigation Search engine optimization (SEO) is mostly a matter of constantly applying the right strategies and staying abreast of the most recent Google algorithm changes. Although modern SEO is a holistic endeavor, the following four tips can make your website climb up a few spots on the Google search engine results page (SERP).  1. Semantic Keyword Research  Although Google has come a long way in terms of how its algorithm evaluates websites, keywords are still major signals for the search engine spiders, crawlers and robots. In early 2016, Google announced RankBrain, a smart algorithm update that reportedly evaluates the semantic nexus of keywords. For example, a website for Ottawa IT services could optimize its content with articles related to managed services, network security and consulting. If Google RankBrain does not find too much content outside of IT services promoted in Ottawa, it cannot establish a semantic nexus, which would result in low SERP ranking.  2. Give Website Visitors Something To Do  Google is paying close attention to the actions visitors take upon arrival. If you set up a landing page that only gives visitors an opportunity to either click on a link or go back to the referral page, your SERP rank will likely be affected. The new SEO paradigm largely consists of offering visitors the opportunity to do something. For example, if the Meta description of a page mentions a video tutorial, the page content should include a YouTube clip preceded by a call to action inviting visitors to click or tap on the embedded object.  3. Optimize Site Navigation  A website that is difficult to navigate is not likely to rank high on the SERP. Site navigation is something that Google has always paid attention to, and this is a signal that will probably become more sophisticated in the future. Adequate navigation is part of user experience, which is a top-level signal for Google. In general, the text of menu tags must elicit a semantic match with the content of the pages that visitors will be navigating to.  4. SEO For A Mobile World  One of the very few search algorithm changes that Google actually announced prior to implementation was its 2015 Mobile Update, which penalizes websites that are not friendly to mobile browsers. The penalties translate into low SERP ranking; thus far, Google has not been too strict in this regard, but that may change in the near future.  In the end, the four SEO tips above are only just the beginning. Google can implement dozens of algorithm adjustments in a year; it is up to you stay abreast of them. When it comes to things like this it is a good idea to do your research and do all you can to make your site as SEO friendly as possible. --- I hope you enjoyed this article on tips to make your company's website more SEO friendly and successful. 8 SEO Tricks You Should Implement NOW To Increase Profits Over the Holidays

October is upon us, which means now is the perfect time for businesses to kick off their holiday marketing campaigns. Seeing as how the months around Christmas have been found to account for at least 19 percent of all annual sales between 2000 to 2014, anyone would be remiss not to put out all stops during this time of the year.

As you've probably figured out by now, digital marketing can work wonders for any traditional marketing campaign, augmenting its reach, effectiveness, and ability to build brand awareness. This is especially true when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO), which can help retailers reach out to more shoppers and increase profits over the holidays.

The only catch is that it usually takes time for any effects made by implementing SEO to kick in, which means that NOW is the best time to begin any SEO campaign for the holidays.

Below are 8 ideas business owners can start integrating into their own SEO campaigns.

1. Churn Out Holiday Content Today

8-seo-hacks-to-implement-this-holiday-season-to-boost-sales

Source

Now is the perfect time to capitalize on incoming holiday searches by publishing holiday-themed content on your site. Sure, you've probably tried making cosmetic changes to your homepage before, maybe even offered some kind of holiday-exclusive product or service package, but what about the written content on your blog?

Naturally, people's search habits change at different times of the year. During the holidays, most people are in "shopping mode"—between Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas, it's no surprise why.

Writing content that's optimized for the holidays allows you to get these searchers on your site. For example, a consumer electronics store can reach out to shoppers by writing blog posts about the following:

  • The best smartphone to buy this Christmas
  • The best video game console to gift someone
  • Best 4K TV to buy on Black Friday
  • In other words, content geared towards attracting people with buying intent has a higher likelihood of generating more views and conversions. And although people don't usually start shopping until mid-November all the way to the end of December, you want to start publishing content today to give search engines time to crawl your content assets.

    2. Zero In On Holiday Gift Keywords

Of course, you can't just create holiday content without taking the right holiday and gift keywords into consideration. If you're a small to medium enterprise (SME), it will be difficult to rank for generic holiday-specific search terms like:

  • "great Christmas gifts"
  • "holiday gift ideas"
  • "husband gift ideas"
  • "gifts for mom"
  • What you can do is focus on long-tail keywords specific to your niche and category. Again, back to the earlier example: you're a consumer electronics store.

You can target keywords such as "holiday iPhone 7 (insert your city)" or "holiday discount Playstation 4."

If you don't know what search terms to play around with, this is where Google's Keyword Planner tool comes in. You should also consider Google Trends to see trending search terms relevant to your industry.

Once you have your keywords, it's simply a matter of integrating them across your landing pages and holiday-themed content assets. This shouldn't be new to you by now, because you're simply optimizing your site with the holidays in mind.

     3. Run a Holiday PPC Campaign

    8-seo-hacks-to-implement-this-holiday-season-to-boost-sales-3

    Source

PPC campaigns are perfect for seasonal promotions. If you want to fast track any gains in visitor traffic and conversions, you can run a PPC campaign on Google AdWords, with your adgroups and ads tailored towards holiday searches, of course.

Nothing will have changed about your target audience or demographic. To continue the previous example, you offer consumers electronics to a target audience made up mostly  of young professionals—nothing about this changes during this holidays.

However, your PPC ads also allow you to reach out to a new set of target buyers who appear only during the holidays. These people give away your products as gifts. Think of parents buying gifts for their kids, or wives looking to buy the latest gadgets for their husbands.

    4. Emphasize Great Shipping Options

    8-seo-hacks-to-implement-this-holiday-season-to-boost-sales-4

    Source

Try as we might to avoid it, many of us still take part in the annual last minute holiday shopping rush. And you can bet that your customers do the same thing. Everyone knows the holiday season gets hectic, mainly because we're all trying to beat the clock in some way. Not surprisingly, this mad rush often creates problems with product supply and shipping delays.

SEO best practices can turn this problem into a marketing opportunity. For starters, you can change your homepage company to emphasize that your company also offers in-store pickup, free shipping (perhaps for a minimum value order), and guaranteed shipping among others.

As the holidays get closer, shoppers will be more concerned about time. Your job is to be proactive and show them you've got their back. However, the key is to put information about shipping options on your site now to reap any SEO benefits in time for the holidays.

    5. Optimize Your Top-performing Pages for the Holidays

If this isn't your first time doing SEO on your website, you probably already know what your top-performing landing pages are. If not, visit your Google Analytics Landing Page Report to see which pages generate the most views and conversions.

When optimizing your site for the holidays, you want to return to these landing pages and give them a spin for the holidays. For example, if you have an ecommerce site, consider embedding holiday keywords on your bestselling products.

This can be done by including the product in a "holiday gift ideas" page, or better yet, by offering some kind of holiday promotion for the product to generate even more shopper interest.

    6. Set Up a Landing Page for Holiday Gift Ideas

    8-seo-hacks-to-implement-this-holiday-season-to-boost-sales-5

    Source

One of the easiest ways to generate clicks and conversions on your most popular products is to set up a new section within your site completely dedicated to holiday gifts.

Whether you create a new landing page within an existing category or create a new category altogether, a holiday gift section can serve as the perfect platform for putting holiday-related keywords to work, putting your holiday-optimized content front and center. Having a section that's highly visible and easy to access is just waiting to be crawled by search engine spiders, which can only be a good thing for your SEO efforts.

Besides making good SEO sense, creating a separate section for holiday gift ideas helps your potential customers find what they want in as little time as possible. In fact, most holiday shoppers don't even know what they want to buy. Your job is to tell them what to consider, which is exactly what this landing page allows you to do.

    7. Upload Your Products on the Big Ecommerce Sites

    8-seo-hacks-to-implement-this-holiday-season-to-boost-sales-6

    Source

This may seem like a common sense tactic, but you'd be surprised at just how many online retailers ignore the value of uploading their products on Amazon and eBay.

Leveraging these two ecommerce giants offers two main benefits.

  • First, many marketers often forget that these two sites actually have their own search engines, which are just as influential as Google. As you may have figured out by now, these two channels are incredibly popular during the holidays, so it makes perfect sense to take advantage of the opportunity to siphon traffic and sales from these sites into your own.
  • Second, increasing the visibility of your products on Amazon and eBay helps to boost your online authority, which in turn improves your ranking on Google's search engine results pages (SERPs).
  • Conduct an SEO Audit to Check Your Site's Health
  • The holidays can also serve as the perfect time to conduct an SEO audit or health check of your website.

In the wake of Google's Panda and Penguin algorithm updates, many sites that relied on now-outdated linkbuilding strategies were penalized and took a hit to their rankings on Google's SERPs.

If this is your first time hearing of these updates, now's as good a time as any to check your website health, which is as easy as visiting Google's Webmaster Tools. Webmaster Tools will tell you if you have issues with the following:

  • 404 errors
  • HTML glitches
  • Duplicate pages
  • Broken links
  • Crawl and index problem
  • Slow page speed issues
  • If you can identify these problems sooner than later, your site should have improved visibility in time for the holiday season.

    Conclusion

Although there will always be people who deride the commercialization of the holidays, there's no denying that the last few months of the year see a disproportionate amount of spending among consumers and businesses themselves. Implementing an SEO campaign early on gives you the advantage of being one of the first movers in your niche. This also gives you more time to prime your site and buyers as they begin mulling their purchase decisions for the holidays.

Remember, with SEO, timing and content are everything. Aim for relevance when creating your holiday-themed content, and always remember to solve your buyers' problems.
