Five ways to use local SEO even when you don’t have a physical premise

How can a business stand out in local SEO with no physical premise? Is it even possible?

Local search is very competitive and it becomes even more of a challenge to compete with other businesses when yours has no physical premise.

Sam Nemzer from Distilled shared with us some useful tips at MozTalk on how to use local SEO for a business with no local pack.

Here are the five tactics that Sam Nemzer suggests:

1) Put user-focused content on category pages

A category page should focus on content and the more you add, the better for the SERPs. In order to add content, you can:

  • Pull in third party data to immediately gain access to useful and relevant content (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Wikipedia, Google Maps, Ticketmaster, TripAdvisor, etc)
  • Use proprietary data that may be helpful for your business (this also makes it easier to obtain featured snippets)
  • Find questions to answer. Sam Nemzer suggested the tool "Answer the Public", a free visual keyword research that allows you to find the right questions for the specific keywords you want to use.

    By the time you've found the answers from the particular keywords, it's time to answer different questions on your own:

    "How can you use this content on your site?"

    "Is this still relevant to your business?"

    "Have I relied too much on auto-generated content?

    Remember, Google is not keen on pages that focus on automatically generated content, so make sure you don't overuse it.

    2) Get the level of granularity right

    It's important to start by researching your analytics data, to understand what gets traffic and how you can increase the content on your site.

    Have a closer look at the keywords and see what people search in your industry.

    Finally, it may be useful to analyse your keyword data and ask yourself: "Do you need location pages at all?"

    How can your business benefit from them? By the time you're able to answer this question, you're ready to continue to more practical tips.

    3) Sidestep local packs by targeting high in the funnel

    In order to avoid the high competition, it may be useful to avoid focusing on the most popular local packs and find the right content gaps to exploit.

    How about aiming for different targeting where there's less competition and more opportunities to stand out?

    Retargeting may be useful to reduce CPC, but this also means that the conversion may not be immediate, although this also means that you can build recognition and serve as a knowledge provider in your industry.

    4) Use structured data to stand out

    Structured data refers to the type of data that provides information through a database and structured data markup may associate a description with its property.

    Whether it's a recipe, an article, a video, or an event, markup helps search engines crawl the content to display it appropriately to the users.

    5) Make the most of Intelligent Personal Assistants

    If local packs don't seem to be effective for your business, there's the option of having people come straight to your app and personal assistants can be really useful in this case.

    Siri, Cortana and Google Now are changing the way people search  through their mobile devices and this may be the right time to focus on this field in order to beat the competition in the most relevant context.

    For example, Google Now allows any app to be integrated and Apple also announced that it will follow this direction, which brings an exciting opportunity for a business looking to be displayed in the right search results.

    9 things most people don’t understand about SEO

    SEO is a complicated discipline. There are many components to it, and best practices change from time to time. Add to that the fact that Google updates its algorithm frequently, causing ranking shifts that are known to make digital marketers lose sleep.

    Additionally, Google often releases new technologies that offer alternative ways to rank. That makes the lives of SEOs even more complicated, as they have to overcome a learning curve to properly serve their clients.

    One day, it might be easier to become a doctor than an SEO — kidding! (But not really… )

    Even now, though, there's a lot of misinformation (and missing information) about what it takes to rank a page in organic search results. Here are nine things most people don't understand about SEO.

    1. Bigger really is better, in most cases, for big terms

    In some niches, Google favors larger sites.

    If you're launching an e-commerce site that sells men's jeans, it's not likely that you're going to rank at the top of the search engine results pages (SERPs) for the search phrase, "men's jeans."

    Why? Google "men's jeans" right now and see who's at the top.

    Means Jeans - SEO

    Disregard the sponsored ads, and you'll notice names like Macy's, Nordstrom, American Eagle, Levi, and Kohl's. Do you really think you have the SEO power to knock any of those brands out of their position?

    Spoiler: You don't.

    Google will generally favor brands that are household names over new startups when it comes to ranking. That's because the search giant wants to provide the best possible experience for its users.

    So does that mean all hope is lost if you're running a new company that wants to sell men's jeans online? Not at all.

    First of all, you can optimize for your own brand name. That way, once you've got some reputation in your space, people can still find your site by searching for your name.

    Also, you can run paid ads. They can put you at the top of the SERPs, but keep in mind that advertising can be costly. As of this writing, the suggested bid for "men's jeans" is $2.09 per click, according to Keyword Planner, so your margins had better be spectacular.

    You should also look for alternative keywords that you can use to promote your brand. You might come across some golden opportunities that even your biggest competitors haven't noticed.

    For example, you might be offering a specific style/color combination of men's jeans. Optimize your site for a search term that includes that style and color.

    2. Websites are broken up into segments

    The reality is that you're not trying to rank a site. You're trying to rank pages within a site.

    Unless you have a site that's a just a single landing page, then ranking a page and a site aren't the same thing. It's more likely that you have various segments on your website, including a home page, a contact form, a blog, a categories page, a price table, an FAQ and possibly other parts. For example, if you take a look at the Levi's website, they have a structure that breaks the site up into sections for Men, Women, Kids and so on.

    Some of those segments are more valuable than others. For example, you're probably not interested in ranking your contact form. However, you certainly want to rank the content on your blog. Focus on ranking pages that will reel in potential customers from the SERPs. Then, use your favorite method to capture their contact information and add them to your email list.

    3. You might just need to rank for a few terms

    You might think that to be successful in SEO, you have to rank for dozens of search terms in the top three positions. That's not necessarily the case.

    If you're in a micro-niche or your target market is very narrow, it's likely that you can get away with just ranking for one or two terms. For example, if you're selling "disc profiles," you are going to make most of your revenue from a few core terms.

    The main point here is that for some sites, ranking for lots of terms makes sense. For others, you can make great money just targeting a few core terms.

    4. Content marketing is very competitive

    You've probably heard "content is king." Unfortunately, so has everybody else in your niche.

    That's why you need to be at the top of your game when it comes to inbound marketing. Invest the right amount of time and money into keyword research, hire the best writers, update your blog consistently, and pull out all the stops to create attention-grabbing headlines with amazing content.

    I recommend using BuzzSumo and Moz Content. Both allow you to analyze a site's content, uncover their strategies, track the new content they create and search the most popular content. Both create some pretty nice reports, too.

    Take a look at your competition — then make a better page for your site.

    5. Early adoption pays off

    As we've seen, Google is known to release new technologies from time to time. Some of those technologies can help you rank in the SERPs.

    That's why you should be an early adopter.

    For starters, take a look at accelerated mobile pages (AMP). That's an open-source project backed by Google that enables webpages to load lightning-fast on a mobile platform. AMP pages can appear at the very top of mobile search results in carousel format. You can see a visual of this in the video below:

    Speaking of mobile, make sure that your site is fully mobile-friendly. Google uses mobile-friendliness as a ranking factor for mobile search results, so if you expect your site to rank there, it had better behave well for a mobile audience.

    Finally, be an early adopter when it comes to using HTTPS on your website instead of HTTP. Even though Google announced back in 2014 that it was giving secure sites a ranking boost, a lot of sites have still stubbornly refused to make the switch. If you want to potentially have an edge on your competition, use HTTPS.

    When it comes to SEO, you need to be the first to market with new technology. These are just a few examples. It takes time to plan, develop and execute, so it is always a good idea to start when the news of new tech breaks.

    6. SEO can be used to target different global markets

    Did you know that you can rank your site in different countries? If your product or service is something that can be appreciated by people outside the United States, you should optimize your site for an international audience.

    One way to do that is by offering a country-specific domain — for example, if you're targeting people in France, you can use the country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) of .fr. You can also host separate content for each different country on a directory or a subdomain.

    When targeting other markets, don't forget to translate your content into the appropriate foreign languages. After all, you can't expect your content marketing efforts to be successful if people in foreign countries can't read your articles in their native language.

    You should also register your business in foreign countries, list your business in web directories specific to those countries, and even have your site hosted in those regions.

    SEM Rush Italy7. There are lots of ways to be visible in Google results

    You might be under the impression that the only way to rank in Google is by building backlinks and using on-site SEO so that a page ends up as high in the SERPs as possible. However, there are other ways to gain visibility and visitors from the SERPs.

    For example, if you can get into Google's Knowledge Graph, your brand can potentially earn a prominent spot at the top of the SERP, to the right of organic listings. It's quite an effort to get a Knowledge Graph entry, but once you do, you could give your brand a big boost.

    You can also stand out from the crowd by using structured data markup to display rich snippets, which are visual enhancements to a SERP listing. Structured data markup is added to your website code to provide Google with more information about the content on your site.

    If you Google "best pancake recipe" right now, you'll see results that include aggregate ratings in the form of stars. You'll also see calorie counts. Those are rich snippets, and they make the listing in the SERPs stand out.

    By the way, you'll also see that there's a direct answer at the very top of many search engine results pages. That's another way that you can achieve search visibility: by establishing your site as an authority in your space and producing content that Google determines to be a quick answer to a user's query.

    If you have a brick-and-mortar business, you can also rank within the local 3-pack. If you Google the name of your city plus the word "plumber," you'll see a map below the paid ads at the top.     As discussed above, publishers can rank by appearing at the top of the mobile SERPs when they implement accelerated mobile pages (AMP).

    Here is a list of common result types that appear in Google's blended search results pages:

  • Organic listings
  • Knowledge Graph cards
  • The local 3-pack
  • Instant answers (also known as "featured snippets")
  • AMP carousel
  • Google Images
  • Google Videos
  • Google News
  • SEMrush and many of the other SEO ranking tools actually report on these varying result types now, which is great.

    The main point is, there's more than one way to win.

    8. There are many different specialties in SEO

    Search engine optimization is a broad online marketing channel that includes a handful of niche disciplines. There are SEO practitioners who specialize in technical SEO, link building, content marketing, local SEO, international SEO and more.

    And guess what? Each requires a different skill set.

    Bottom line: You need to determine first how you want to rank a site and then select the appropriate campaign strategy.

    9. There are other search engines besides Google

    Sure, Google is the undisputed leader in web searches. That doesn't mean that other search engines don't exist and that people in your target market don't use them.

    The most obvious competitor to Google is Bing. That's Microsoft's search engine, and as of this writing, its share of search traffic is growing faster than Google's.

    And don't forget about YouTube. Believe it or not, YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world behind Google.

    Of course, there's also Amazon. You might think of Amazon as more of an e-commerce giant than a search engine. However, it's the starting point for 44 percent of consumers searching for products.

    SEO Guide: An Introduction to Mobile SEO

    Editor's Note: This is a section of our soon to be completely redone SEO Guide. Enjoy!

    Even before the first Apple iPhone was released in 2007, marketers were asking the question: "What should my mobile strategy be?" And it's a question that many are still asking today. One thing is for sure, though: the mobile web is here to stay.

    A recent report from BI Intelligence projected by the year 2020, there will be 3.5 billion smartphones shipped worldwide. And users are increasingly shifting to mobile as their primary device for accessing the internet. In fact, Google announced last year that now, "more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries, including the US and Japan."

    This makes sense, because (as Benedict Evans recently wrote), "It's actually the PC that has the limited, basic, cut-down version of the Internet…it only has the web."

    Our mobile devices have much more information to draw on than a desktop device:

  • photos
  • geolocation
  • friends
  • physical movement
  • As well as greater interactivity:

  • with the external world (through technology like beacons)
  • with you when you're not using it (through notifications)
  • with your personal identity (because a phone is always signed-in and it is almost always an individual device rather than a shared one).
  • So how do search marketers ensure that this boom in mobile web usage won't leave them behind? By staying on top of the basics of mobile search.

    How Google Deals with Mobile Search

    Google has many different crawlers for different use cases and different indexes, such as:

  • Googlebot
  • Googlebot News
  • Googlebot Images
  • Googlebot Video
  • For mobile search (specifically for smartphones), they use a version of Googlebot which uses a smartphone's user-agent, so that the crawler can have the same user experience as actual mobile users (such as redirects to mobile versions, etc.).

    This is the current Googlebot user-agent for smartphones:

    Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 8_3 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/600.1.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/8.0 Mobile/12F70 Safari/600.1.4 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)

    For comparison, this is the regular Googlebot user-agent:

    Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)

    It is worth noting that Google does not consider tablets to be the same thing as mobile. Although they do consider tablets a separate class of device from both mobile and desktop, nonetheless, their view is that "Unless you offer tablet-optimized content, you can assume that users expect to see your site as it would look on a desktop browser."

    The mobile-friendly pages discovered by the smartphone Googlebot crawler, as well as mobile page versions discovered by the desktop crawler, are indexed as usual. However the SERP may include a different set of results for a mobile user than a desktop one, and mobile-friendly pages will be given a slight ranking boost, all things being equal.

    Note that Google judges mobile-friendliness on a page-by-page basis rather than across an entire website, so if you have limited resources it is best to start by making your most valuable pages mobile-friendly first and branching out from there.

    Google's Mobile-Friendly Update ("Mobilegeddon")

    In 2015, Google announced a new rankings update for mobile search, which was nicknamed "Mobilegeddon". On April 21, the rollout began, and the internet started to see the effects.

    Some websites were directly impacted, losing up to 35% of mobile rankings within the 1st month — and some more indirectly, by the incentive to move towards mobile-friendliness before the update hit.

    Google announced a 4.7% increase in the number of mobile-friendly sites in the time between announcing that the update was coming and when it actually rolled out.

    Around the same time, Bing also announced they would be rolling out a similar update, although they haven't provided as much information on the timeline of this. However, generally speaking, a site which is well-optimized for Google mobile search should perform well in Bing.

    A new version of Google's mobile-friendly update has recently been released (in May of 2016), so we can expect to see a further impact from this as a ranking factor over time.

    So how do you make sure your site is correctly designed and optimized for mobile search?

    Making Your Website Mobile-Friendly

    There are three main approaches to making a website mobile-friendly. These are:

  • Responsive Design: the page – URL, HTML, images, everything – remains the same, but the CSS rearranges the page layout depending on-screen width.
  • TIP: Google has expressed this is their preferred approach, although they support the other two as well. This is primarily because responsively designed sites don't require any additional technical implementation to optimize them for search.

  • RESS/Adaptive/Dynamic Serving: the URL remains the same, but the server sends a different version of the HTML (and CSS) based on what type of device is requesting the page.
  • Separate Mobile Site: as the name implies, this is when you simply create a second, "mobile-friendly" website for mobile users. Separate mobile sites usually sit on a subdomain (e.g. m.domain.com) or sometimes a subfolder (e.g. www.domain.com/mobile).
  • When creating a separate mobile site, the best approach is to keep all the same pages and content in the same structure (e.g. www.domain.com/first-page and m.domain.com/first-page). This makes it easy to redirect based on user agent/device, and also to indicate to Google what pages are equivalent on the mobile vs desktop version.

    But since it's a separate set of pages, you could choose to have a completely different site structure, in which case the mobile URLs might be different.

    How to Figure Out if Your Site is Mobile-Friendly

    Here are a few tools you can use to check whether your site is mobile-friendly:

    SEO for Mobile Search

    If you have a responsive site which is optimized for search, you won't need to do anything different for the mobile crawler. Note that when you are auditing the site, it is worth crawling it using a mobile user agent in addition to your regular crawl. This will allow you to identify any crawl issues which only occur on mobile.

    Site performance (around things like speed and page load time) may also impact results for mobile search. An effective responsive site serves appropriately sized assets for the user's screen size, even if the underlying HTML/CSS is the same. It's worth checking site speed separately for mobile and desktop (and easy to do with Google's PageSpeed Insights tool!).

    If you have a dynamically served site or a separate mobile site, you'll also need to add a couple of things to your pages to make sure that Google understands that the two versions are connected.

    Optimizing an Adaptive Website for Mobile Search

    An adaptive (or dynamically served) site uses a single URL, but serves a different version of the HTML/CSS depending on the type of device requesting the page.

    While basic SEO principles remain the same as for a responsive site, you also need to make sure you avoid the appearance of cloaking.

    Cloaking is when you show one thing to a search engine, and something different to a human user, and Google will devalue sites that are doing this for SEO gains. (Note that visually hiding or minimizing content for UI purposes, such as including a menu which is collapsed on load, do not count as cloaking as long as the content is accessible to users and crawlers alike.)

    In the case of a dynamically served site, you want to signal to Google that you are showing different content based on user agent to provide the appropriate version of the page for the device accessing the page, rather than to trick the Googlebot user agent for nefarious SEO purposes.

    To make it clear that this is what you're doing, you should use the Vary-HTTP Header.

    Using this header has two additional benefits:

  • It will let the mobile crawler know there is separate mobile content on this URL, and therefore encourage it to crawl the site.
  • It will signal to caching servers that they should consider the user agent (e.g. the type of device) when deciding whether to serve a page from the cache.
  • Optimizing a Separate Mobile Website for Mobile Search

    A mobile site on a separate URL is effectively a different site, so you'll need to optimize these pages in addition to optimizing the desktop version. Again, the basic SEO principles remain the same, with a few extra guidelines:

  • Create a parallel URL structure
  • Unless you've built your mobile site with very different content than your desktop site, the URL structure for your mobile site should mirror the relevant pages on your desktop site as closely as possible. So www.example.com/funny-story should become m.example.com/funny-story, not m.example.com/different-page.

  • Add mobile switchboard tags
  • A separate mobile site with the same or similar content as the desktop version could potentially be seen as a case of duplicate content, which may be suppressed by search engines.

    This is where the mobile switchboard tag comes in. This tag indicates to Google crawlers that this is an alternate version of the site intended for mobile devices. A version of this tag is placed on both the desktop and mobile versions of the page.

    To set up switchboard tags correctly:

  • On the desktop version, place a mobile-specific rel="alternate" tag indicating the relevant mobile page.
  • On the mobile version, place a rel="canonical" tag indicating the relevant desktop page.
  • These annotations can be included in the HTML of the pages themselves and sitemaps (but you don't have to do both).

    As an example, where the desktop URL is http://example.com/page-1 and the equivalent mobile URL is http://m.example.com/page-1, the tagging for this example would be as follows.

    In HTML:

    On the desktop page (http://www.example.com/page-1), place the following:

    <link rel="alternate" media="only screen and (max-width: 640px)"href="http://m.example.com/page-1″>

    and on the mobile page (http://m.example.com/page-1), include:

    <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/page-1″>

    The rel="canonical" tag on the mobile URL indicating the desktop URL is always required.

    In Sitemaps:

    You can place the rel="alternate" tag for desktop pages in your sitemaps, as follows:

    The required rel="canonical" tag on the mobile URL must still be included in the mobile page's HTML.

  • Consider user-agent redirects
  • Some visitors will arrive at the wrong version of your site for their device, and you may want to redirect them. Use server-side redirects rather than Javascript redirects. You may use either 301 or 302 redirects.

  • Additional guidance for handling redirects to a mobile site:
  • Don't redirect all desktop pages to the mobile homepage; instead, point them to a mobile page which is relevant to the original.
  • Include a link to 'view desktop version' on your mobile site (and vice versa). Use cookies to ensure that if a user clicks on this option the user agent detection will be overridden, and they will not be redirected again (unless they choose to switch back via the 'view mobile version' option).
  • Send tablet users to the desktop site, rather than the mobile site (unless you have a tablet-specific version). Tablet browsing patterns typically resemble desktop browsing patterns more than mobile.
  • Keep both versions crawlable
  • Make sure you're not blocking the Googlebot smartphone user-agent from your desktop version in robots.txt and don't block regular Googlebot from the mobile version.

    Schema.org, Rich Snippets, and Rich Cards

    As Google shifts towards more of a card-based format in the SERPs, and especially on mobile devices where the screen height means limited screen real estate, any steps we can take to obtain enhanced results like rich snippets and rich cards (through the use of structured data markup) becomes increasingly valuable.

    In addition to trends around mobile-friendliness as a ranking factor, Google has been working towards a few other key trends which relate directly to mobile technology and user behavior:

  • The Accelerated Mobile Pages Project to improve site speed and page load times for mobile content, and allow this content to be cached and served directly within a SERP (rather than sending the user to the original website)
  • Removing sidebar ads from the desktop SERP layout for a more streamlined, "mobile" look
  • Integrating app content with web search through support for app indexation and app streaming

    Customer reviews are an important contributing factor to local search rankings. But Brodie Tyler, founder of ReviewJump, believes that they aren't given enough emphasis – by businesses or the SEO community.

    The business of reputation management has changed drastically with the advent of the internet.

    The BrightLocal Local Customer Review Survey 2015 found that 92% of customers will read online reviews to determine whether a local business is a good one, and that 80% of customers trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation.

    "Pre-internet, you used to ask around, ask your friends and family for recommendations, and that was basically your reputation. Now, with the internet, everything's public. You can't hide anything. Customers can leave you a review without your control," says Tyler.

    "So yes, things have changed drastically over the years, and that's why you have to invest in it and pay more attention to it. Whether you like it or not, you have an online reputation. It's just a matter of whether or not you're going to do something about it."

    A direct correlation with ranking

    Tyler founded ReviewJump, a web app that makes it easy for businesses to solicit customer reviews and to deal with negative feedback before it reaches the review stage, because he saw a niche in the market for businesses to directly control their online reputation.

    "I come from the agency world, and ReviewJump was born out of my frustration at not being able to control the number of reviews our clients were obtaining," he says. "I could control just about everything else – their link building, their on-site optimization; we can even control their content marketing. One thing I didn't have was the right tool for helping our clients get more reviews."

    "Reviews have a direct correlation on where you rank in the local search results," adds Tyler. "I know that because I did the research myself, personally."

    Tyler individually analyzed 22,000 local business listings on Google and Yelp in order to prove his own theory about the impact of reviews on local SEO rankings. "This was prior to launching ReviewJump, and I was in search of validation for reinvesting in our reputation management software; that's why I was doing this research."

    He found that the top three local search results on Google, also known as the 'three-pack' of local search, have an average of 472% more reviews than those in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions.

    The research showed that 66% of the time, the first three local search results had more reviews than the second three. And 63% of the time, the local listing with the most reviews overall would be ranked in the top three results.

    The importance of online reputation

    In spite of the persuasive SEO argument in favor of reviews, Tyler believes online reputation management isn't valued as much as it should be.

    "In my experience, a very small percentage [of companies] are actually doing anything about it," he said. "Which I think can offer them a competitive advantage. If only a small percentage are paying attention to their reviews and online reputation, including yourself, that can give you an advantage."

    In its local search ranking factors for 2015, Moz ranked review signals – which encompasses review quantity, velocity and diversity – seventh out of a total of eight overall ranking factors, crediting it with an 8.4% influence on local search ranking. But Tyler believes this undervalues the importance of reviews to local SEO.

    "I think that's not accurate; I think that's too low. I've done the research on that," he says. "Maybe there needs to be more research into reviews as an overall ranking factor, or maybe it hasn't been publicized enough."

    ReviewJump have seen the benefits of an increased number of reviews for their own clients. "There's a medical spa in Arizona, Vitality Med Spa. They've been in business for years, but they only had a dozen or so reviews before they started with us. And in the last three weeks alone, they've gotten 33 new reviews in one location.

    "That's an increase of about 400%, all of them either four or five stars." And, crucially, the spa is also ranking at number one in the three-pack of local search results.

    Another client, a chain of boutique hotels, has enjoyed an increase of 335% more reviews each month since starting with ReviewJump. And one of the company's earliest clients, Modern Dental, was ranked tenth in the local SERPs shortly after it came on board with ReviewJump, but is now showing up in the three-pack.

    If Tyler could give one tip to companies looking to improve their online reputation management, it would be to understand that their reputation truly does affect their revenue. "You're in business to make money. And I believe that people are missing out by not giving their online reputation the credence it deserves.

    "The more reviews you have, the higher you're going to rank, the more traffic you're going to get, the more phone calls you're going to get, the more customers you're going to sell to."
