5 Reasons Regular Audits Can Bring Life Back Into Your Business

November 1, 2017

Marketing strategies have seen a major upheaval in the past decade — currently a majority of marketing campaigns revolve around digital media as opposed to print media and interpersonal interactions. Every notable business is curating an online presence through website development, social media engagements, guest blogging etc. because, from a buyer's perspective, your business does not stand a chance if it cannot be located on the other end of the screen.

Amongst these digitalized marketing techniques, website development and its subsequent running requires the greatest amount of effort and resources. But it also offers greater rewards because it gives your product or service more visibility, provides a more comprehensive insight into your company's value, better asserts your credibility through personal interactions with the customers and, above all, encompasses all crucial aspects of your organization on a single domain.

Once you have a functioning website, its success depends on its organic reach to the potential consumer base through search engines' result rankings. SEO has become a Holy Grail for earning a high ranking. Therefore, you need to evaluate the website's performance in accordance with the ever-changing search engine algorithms. This is where audit comes into play.

Audit, in the digital world, refers to the technique of analyzing all the factors that influence a website's visibility in search engines. A thorough SEO audit is comprised of both external and internal analysis where external analysis helps you understand your share of the SEO market and internal analysis reveals the effectiveness of your website's optimization to garner this share. Therefore, SEO audits are crucial tools that provide your business with insightful information about maintaining a healthy performance of the website.

Here is why your business can flourish with regular audits:

Changing algorithms

Search engines regularly update their algorithms to provide more relevant results to users' search keywords. Whether the algorithm upgrade is minor or major, it can have drastic impact on the standings of your website. Moreover, the users rarely, if ever, go through all the results and usually click on the first few websites that are most visible. According to statistics, the first result on a Google's search ranking has a click through rate of 34.36 percent further validating the importance of securing the highest rankings.

Since search engines can upgrade their algorithm without any prior indication, it becomes imperative that your website is audited consistently. Regular audits can help enhance your website's compatibility with the new algorithm, ensuring a prime spot on the search rankings.

Search engine traffic

Apart from the algorithms, search engines like Google employ a variety of "authority" metrics that determine the relevance of your website. These metrics are often undisclosed and may even vary from query to query. Most common ranking factors include content, links a page receives, regularity of updates and off-site optimization.

These metrics can also undergo transformation hence reducing the relevancy of your website, dropping its position in the rankings and thus affecting the number of visitors of the website. Even if you have paid ads which are displayed at the top of the SERPs, approximately 70-80 percent users overlook the paid ads in favor of organic results.

A SEO audit can conclude the reason behind a significant drop in visitations by figuring out the changes in metrics. Regular audits can also uncover other factors which may have been impacting user traction.

Outdated content

If you are one of the 77 percent of B2C or 86 percent of B2B organizations that swear by content marketing, you may be generating quality content routinely. Content generation is a great strategy to increase the visibility of your website in the SERPs, especially if the content on your page is informative and engaging.

However, having too much content that is not garnering significant user traffic due to being outdated can have negative impact on your brand's image.  Content can become outdated in less than six months, hence regular audits can help you figure out the pages that haven't been perused in the past few months so you can remove them from your website. Once the site isn't weighed down by old content, it can provide a fresh outlook to visitors.

Bounce rate

Bounce rate refers to the percentage of users who visited your website but navigated away too soon without browsing more pages. For example, an average bounce rate of 60 percent denotes that 60 percent of visitors left after only viewing the first page they encountered. An elevated bounce rate can nod to a number of factors such as a lackluster home page, unattractive user interface or misinforming metadata.

A SEO audit can help you figure out the root cause of a high bounce rate and fix it as soon as possible so that you can retain your visitors long enough to convert them into customers.

Link profile

According to Mark Jacob, a link profile comprises of:

• The type of links leading back to your website — legitimate, high quality links with relevance to the content of the linking page are preferred.

• The time period it took to acquire those links — whether they were paid links all bought at the same time or were embedded in the linking content organically.

• The anchor text of those links — natural, relevant text that pertains to the linked site.

Google cites link profile as one of most important factors of SERP ranking. It not only measures the number of inbound links your website hosts but also quantifies the quality of those links.

Therefore, an audit can help you evaluate your link profile by ensuring that you are not associated with any substandard websites via backlinks. Constant auditing practice assists you in maintaining your overall link profile because it can undergo changes on a daily basis losing you user traffic.

Ideally, audits should be conducted biannually to help you be on top of the SEO game without investing too much time in auditing. Moreover, a pre-determined and comprehensive SEO audit checklist can guide you on the most essential elements that need to be evaluated every time in order to maintain high website performance and a strong user traffic.

How To Build An SEO Strategy To Dominate Search Results

How To Build An SEO Strategy To Dominate Search Results

search magnifying glass

by Mark Woodcock, founder of Bigfoot Digital

If you want to rank well on Google, get to the top spot for specific industry terms related to your business and increase conversions, then you're in the right place. First and foremost, you need to determine the correct SEO strategy for your business. You might hear that someone has got to position one with a handful of bought, spammy links and it actually works. It might do, at first. Fast forward a couple of months and I can assure you things will have changed significantly.

In this article I'll discuss five strategies that will help any business dominate SERP's, along with white hat tactics you can use along the way:

1. Think long tail for long term success.

It's easy to think "I sell cakes. I want to rank for cakes." But it's also lazy to stop there. Sure, if you sell cakes, you want to appear for terms with "cake" in the title, as well as other variations of that word:

Cake shop in London London cake shop Top cake shop in London Best cake shop in London Cake decorating in London

Think about what people search for. Ask yourself, what types of cakes do I sell? Should I create more targeted posts to secure conversions? Will specific content related to those cakes be relevant? Yes, yes and YES. It's incredibly important to look at things on a granular level when it comes to SEO. Research the following tools for keyword popularity, trending content and site history: Ahrefs, Google Keyword Planner and Majestic SEO.

2. Promote industry leading content.

Position yourself as an industry figure head with creative content, interviews and links back to your work. Publishing content on social media channels, blogging and through influencer marketing will make you appear more trustworthy and authorative in the eyes of your audience.

The added benefit is that along with promoting your business and skills, you can earn trust from Google with a carefully placed follow link. These links pass trust and relevance from one site to another. In the eyes of Google, this acts as a nod from one business to another to say, "these guys can be trusted."

3. Become an influencer.

Flip the script, and become an influencer yourself. I know you're thinking it's probably easier said than done, right? But, if you're willing to work hard to build a network, then you won't have to jump through as many hoops to gain exposure and links from others. In fact, when done right, you can actually ask your target market to help promote you and your business.

Here's a perfect example. I'm in the digital marketing business, so I'm well known here. People know my history and business inside out. Focusing on promoting my business to different industry sectors has grown my target market significantly. Social media advertising, PPC and email marketing have allowed me to reach out to business owners in specific industries. These people do not know my business and may not have considered digital marketing for their business. We automatically become more valuable as they have no means of comparison. Test it for yourself, and monitor the results.

4. Consider alternative methods of search.

Due to the familiarity of technology, use of mobile phones and growth of voice search, SEO has changed somewhat. Instead of someone opening their laptop or desktop and typing in "cake shops in London," they literally ask Google on their mobile phones. Consider this when putting together your SEO strategy. People are using longer, more complex phrases to find results. To get results yourself, you need to go beyond keywords. Get inside the head of your audience and consider what they are thinking. How will they find your website – organically, paid search or social? Will they have a positive user experience once there? Is your call to action clear? Answer these questions, and you are one step closer to converting clicks into customers.

5. Review your competitors.

Don't bash your customers with negative SEO, because it will only look like you're trying to overcompensate for something. Instead, write content that compares your products/ services to theirs with pros and cons. Allow your visitors to make an informed decision about your services based on facts. Your business may appeal to a slightly different audience, so effectively you are promoting both businesses in one post. This tactic is clever and will give your business immediate trust.

Why You Rank On Google But Not On Bing And Yahoo (And How to Fix It)

bing-yahoo-ranking

When you can Google the word google and find that it's now a verb meaning "to use the Google search engine to obtain information about someone or something"—you know Google's become a household name.

image

No doubt Google is the biggest search engine kid on the block. Even in just the last year, they've grown their market share a whole 10%—earning them a whopping 77% total market share in the search engine game. Where does Bing/Yahoo fit into this picture? Together they account for roughly 18% of the search engine market, which isn't a lot, but it's also not nothing.

Let's talk about why you might be succeeding on Google SERPs but not Bing/Yahoo SERPs and what to do about it. But first, let's figure out if worrying about Bing/Yahoo SEO is even worth your time.

Is It Worth The Trouble?

clip_image004The first thing we should figure out is: who is even using Bing or Yahoo? Who prefers them over Google and why? (BTW, Yahoo search is powered by Bing, yet their SERPs don't always look exactly the same. Peculiar.)

Some people say a huge chunk of the people using Bing are Microsoft employees. Some people say it's the elderly and less tech-savvy populations, which makes sense. Because most Bing searches are performed on Internet Explorer, the default browser on Windows devices—for which Bing is set as the default search engine—it's likely that older folks and less technologically inclined folks are just using Bing because it's there.

Surprisingly, some people actually choose Bing as their preferred search engine: coders, students, and people who rely on international maps function all prefer Bing for various reasons.

We've also got our folks using intelligent personal assistant Cortana to perform searches with Bing. So in short, we've got our:

  • Elderly folks
  • Non-tech-savvy folks
  • Programmers/other special features users
  • Cortana users.
  • And for Yahoo's part, we've got a lot of folks who:

  • already use Yahoo mail (and so use Yahoo search as their default) or one of Yahoo's other popular services like Yahoo Answers, Fantasy, Shopping, IM, Finance, News, etc.; or
  • prefer the security implications of using the little guy.
  • While current stats on the "Rise of Bing" and increased Bing market share are contradictory and difficult to confirm, there is a buzz in the air suggesting Bing use is on the rise. There's similar talk in the rumor mills about Yahoo, too. So even if your target markets don't line up with the demographics listed in the bullets above, you might not want to write off customizing SEO for Bing and Yahoo completely.

And if you do market and sell to any of the demographics above, you'll definitely want to keep on reading.

    Where Google And Bing/Yahoo Differ

clip_image006They're all very similar. They even look similar. (It seems that Yahoo and Bing have no shame in copying Google's SERP web design almost exactly).

Where they differ is in the algorithms they use to rank search results, obviously—something you probably figured out already if your spot on all the SERPs don't match up.

    Content Type

Google's algorithms love text (i.e. it even relies on text for crawling visual content via alt descriptions and captions); Bing/Yahoo love visual content.

This is especially true for Flash content: while Google and even Adobe are phasing out of their support of Flash, Bing seems to be stuck in the past, preferring (and, it seems like, even rewarding) websites that use Flash.

    Backlinks

    Here'swhat Bing says about backlinks:

"The site linking to your content is essentially telling Bing they trust your content. As a result, Bing rewards links that have grown organically, that is, that have been added over time by content creators on other trusted, relevant websites made to drive real users from their site to your site."

If location, location, location is the marketer's creed, then backlinks, backlinks, backlinks are the SEOer's. But turns out Bing prefers less backlinks—but of higher quality. This means that winning an inbound link from another site is only helpful if that website 1) curates and minimizes the amount of backlinks they use (no backlink stuffing!) and 2) is, for its own part, a high-quality website.

Another key difference: exact match anchor text from inbound links is a big win for Bing, but not for Google.

    Keywords

Google allows for wiggle room and less direct, context-based keywords and is a bit more sensitive to keyword stuffing; Bing/Yahoo needs direct keywords.

    Social Signals

Bing seems to place more importance on websites mentioned/engaged in social media. One example: when you search a company in Bing, you're automatically able to see if a Facebook friend or Twitter follower has mentioned/recommended the company or product.

    Bing on social:

"If you are influential socially, this leads to your followers sharing your information widely, which in turn results in Bing seeing these positive signals. These positive signals can have an impact on how you rank organically in the long run."

    Page Authority

Both Google and Bing reward high authority domains like those ending in .edu and .gov with their algorithms, but it's mostly Bing that cares about domain age. Older domains will rank a bit higher on Bing SERPs.

    Search Terms With Double Meanings

If one search term could mean two things, Google usually places the most popular website associated with the search term first. Bing deals with double meanings by showing local results first.

    Local SEO

It seems that Bing is the small business champ, as it tends to list more local businesses on their SERPs. Google tends to favor the bigger, more established businesses, probably because their algorithms view them as more "credible" search results.

How To Optimize For All Three

The one thing you can do that's a surefire way to rank for all 3 search engines is to consistently create genuinely helpful and engaging content for your visitors. That's the one big thing Google, Bing, and Yahoo agree on: although they have different algorithms for grading websites and ranking them on SERPs, all they really want to do is reward the best sites for being most helpful to visitors.

It's hard to say there's any one thing you can do that'll benefit you with all 3 search engines, especially now that we know how much their algorithms differ. There are a few things you can do, though, that should help your SERP ranking all around.

    1. Content And Keywords

Google likes text, Bing likes rich content. Google can work with context keywords, Bing needs direct. What's a SEOer to do?

Incorporate parts of both strategies, of course. The great thing the differences between Google and Bing/Yahoo search algorithms is that most of the criteria aren't mutually exclusive. You can have both lots of good text-based content and rich multimedia. You can have indirect keywords and direct keywords, as long as you're not keyword stuffing.

So that's what you should do: make sure you're incorporating both text content with indirect keywords, and rich content with direct keywords onto your site.

    2. Backlinks And Social Media

Backlinks: Google likes quantity, Bing likes quality. All you can do is make sure you're earning as many backlinks as you can, all from quality websites. The more you build your portfolio of backlinks from trustworthy and well-ranked websites, the more you'll climb on Bing and Google SERPs.

Same goes for social media: all you can do is just get better at social media all round. Encourage social sharing with social sharing buttons on all your pages and blog posts, and consider running a social media campaign to incentivize social media users to share your stuff and talk about you. The great thing is you can focus on making strides with Bing on this one; it's not like Google will punish you for having an even better social media presence!

    3. Claiming Localclip_image008

Remember how we said Bing loves to champion for the local guy? Well one thing you can do right now is claim your local listing (or create one, if you're not listed in search results already) for your brick-and-mortar. All you've got to do is add some information about your local listing and verify it using a PIN number.

    4. Keep It Ethical

No matter what search engine you're trying to climb the ranks with, you can't go wrong by keeping your SEO strategy ethical and customer-driven. Your SEO won't ever suffer by doing the right thing.

Buying backlinks = not so ethical. Keyword stuffing = not so ethical. Doing anything to try to "trick" search engine algorithms that doesn't ultimately add to your visitors' experiences = definitely not ethical. Here's your reminder to keep it real, no matter what kind of SEO you do.

    5. Use Bing Webmaster Tools And Keep Up With The Bing Webmaster Blog.

Bing Webmaster Tools likeSEO Reports and theSEO Analyzer tool are an SEOer's best friend for SEO feedback straight from the search engine itself. With these tools, you'll be able to perform on-demand scanning of individual pages, track your progress, and keep up to date with changes to Bing algorithms that could affect your site.

Rising On Google Serps But Falling/Plateauing On Bing And Yahoo? Here Are Your Options

Beyond the 4 tips listed above, here's how to rectify this kind of unbalanced SEO success.

Do What's Listed In The 4 Tips Above And Monitor Results

Before making any big decisions, make these small changes first! If these small changes are enough to fix your SEO lopsidedness problem, well then that's just great. Be sure to have a system for measuring your results so you'll know exactly what kind of fruits your labor is yielding.

Ask Yourself: Is It Good Enough?

Have these tips boosted you enough to satisfy your hunger to rank on Bing, even if you're not at the top?

While it's unlikely any one thing you do to improve Bing rankings will hurt your Google rankings, it is possible that throwing all of your focus into ranking on Bing can hurt your chances for climbing higher on Google, if anything because of the opportunity cost involved. Time spent strategizing for Bing is time not spent building more success with Google.

And let's remember, Bing/Yahoo together make up less 20% of search engine market share, while Google is still the search engine king and probably will remain so for the foreseeable future. Let's recall the kind of folks who still use Bing/Yahoo: small specialty groups like coders, the elderly/less tech-inclined, and Microsoft employees.

So before you move on to the 2 tactics below, I urge you to ask yourself: do you really need to rank high on Bing, too? If your target markets fall into one of these categories, then maybe it is more crucial for you to rank on Bing.

But…if not? Is it really worth it? Wouldn't you rather put all your efforts towards ranking super high on the search engine with 80% of market share? Of course your answer will depend on your own preferences, your target markets, and how many resources are at your disposal.

If you're set on ranking higher on Bing and Yahoo, keep reading.

    Build A Site For Bing

If you have more time than money and want to rank organically, this option's for you.

It's the most time consuming option for ranking higher on bing, but if Bing connects you with a lucrative enough target market, then this option could be worth it for you. A site built for Bing would focus more on multimedia-rich content and use more concise, direct keywords. (Careful not to include duplicate content—this would hurt your ranking for all search engines.)

    Run A Bing/yahoo Ad Campaign

If you have more money than time and want a safer, faster way to rank on Bing or Yahoo, try running a Bing ad campaign on the Bing/Yahoo ad network. (Some even say Bing Ads performs much better than Google AdWords!)

And since Bing/Yahoo aren't crowded with SEOers trying to make it to the top, it's much cheaper to run an ad campaign on Bing! It won't be organic, but it will get the job done much faster, and most likely cheaper, since you're not using man hours trying to figure out how to climb on Bing SERPs while maintaining your spot on Google's. clip_image010

You Really Can Have It All

If you think it's worth it, all you have to do is put in a little extra elbow grease to transform your site into tasty crawler-food for both Google and Bing/Yahoo bots.

That's definitely my first recommendation: get your content, keywords, backlinks and social media strategies polished up. If you're still not where you'd like to be on the little guy SERPs, I definitely recommend looking into Bing/Yahoo ads—the safest way to rank without sabotaging your spot on Google SERPs.

How about you? Where are you most focused on ranking as we near the end of 2017? Are you thinking you might include Bing/Yahoo search in next quarter's SEO strategy plan, or will you stick to Google? Let us know in the comments below!

Google Search Algorithm & Ranking Update Brewing?

    Google Update Brewing

Over the past 24-48 hours there has been an uptick in chatter across social media, the SEO communities and the forum threads around Google ranking and search results shifts. In fact, it has been pretty volatile over the past couple of months based on our reporting. But there seems to have been something going on, maybe a test, maybe the beginnings of a roll out in the past day or so.

The ongoing WebmasterWorld thread has chatter of course, here is some of it:

Not sure what's wrong today but I am not able to rank one of my new articles, I have several articles on that news topic and in past they ranked on first page in just 2-3 hours after publishing. Its been 17 hours since I published the 700 words article and I cannot see it anywhere! All old articles.

We are seeing quite wild swings across all sites. I know there are quite a lot of these predictions around here these days, and yes i do appreciate that updates are happening almost all the time (thank you very much) but this does look like some sort of "larger than a normal day" type update.

I am seeing some huge SERP fluctuations today for Google UK. For all of the many brand keywords which I used to rank top 10 for I am now pushed to 2nd or 3rd page.

I checked the Google tracking tools and some of them are showing big swings as well, not all but tools like Mozcast and Accuranker are showing huge swings, while others show small changes or none. Here are the graphs from all of them this morning:

6 Digital Marketing Tools You Must Try in 2018

I love this industry because digital marketing is always changing and there are always new tools to check! New tools open up new opportunities, offer new insights and inspire new tactics.

Here are six tools I intend to give a thorough look in 2018.

    What are yours?

    1. Topvisor

    Topvisor

Topvisor is a newer tool in my marketing arsenal but it's quickly becoming my favorite tool! I love their keyword research and grouping features and use them every time I plan a content strategy for a new client. It also has a nice rank tracking feature that updates me on all changes that need attanetion.

    2. Netpeak Spider

    Netpeak Spider

One of the most indepth and flexible web crawlers out there, Netpeak Spider provides smooth experience and lots of features. It automatically checks 50+ parameters and detects more than 60 SEO errors (including http status errors, canonical issues, Robots.txt issues, meta tag issues and more).

    Netpeak Spider

It has 5 crawling modes (site-wide, directory, URL list, XML Sitemap and even from Google SERP). Each of them allows to perform certain SEO tasks, for example, by crawling an XML sitemap, you can detect 21 XML sitemap issues in 17 parameters and send the corrected sitemap files to the search engines.

It even has the ability to calculate your site internal PageRank giving your ideas if important pages of your site are not getting enough power internally.

    3. Buffer for video

There's nothing new about Buffer. It's been around for quite some time now! So why am I including it in this list? Because Buffer never stops and their most recently added feature is a proof!

Buffer for video is the first product to allow native video scheduling to all the big social media networks. So: upload once, share everywhere.

Not in the video game yet? This stats should change your mind:

  • 82% of Twitter users watch video content on Twitter
  • The number of videos in Facebook feeds has grown by 360%
  • In the U.S., people are posting 94% more videos to Facebook
  • 50% of Americans who use Facebook daily watch at least 1 video every day
  • 4. Slack

I am sure many of you are aware of Slack but few people know that it's not merely about chatting and collaborating. With the ability to add bots, Slack has become one of the most diverse multi-purpose platforms.

The two cool bots to add:

  • Notify: Brings your brand mentions to your Slack feed. It serves as more of an ambient notification feed for these alerts and may inspire more team conversation than individual emails.
  • Statsbot: Brings Google Analytics stats to your Slack feed. Ask the bot about your stats and see the graphs and numbers right in the message thread.
  • Statsbot

    5. Drip

It is no secret that I am not a big fan of Mail Chimp. I find their system overly bulky, difficult to use, and their policies are so unclear you can violate them by accident. I have tried a number of alternatives, but none of them were the simple, effective drip email platform I wanted. Until I found Drip.

It is a cool system that lets you create an easy sales funnel, in a visual way. While I don't do direct sales, I have found the same principle applies to content promotion. My email campaigns have become much more effective thanks to this little gem.

    Drip

Drip workflows seem amazingly easy and fun to set up. Here are options for automation systems and this one seems like a great one to add to the list.

    6. Ptengine

    ptengine

Ptengine is a great heatmap application, you can find out at exactly what point customers are choosing to leave your site. Isolating that point is crucial, so you can make the necessary changes to push them to the final step.

Unlike many other heatmap tools, this one provides much more insight than just a visualization. See referral information, track social media campaigns and engagement (page views, visit duration and conversions).

If you are planning a redesign in 2018, this is must-have tool to try! M-Connect Media also has a great guide listing more tools and tips.

And which tools are you planning to try in 2018?

Kyle Roof Debunks SEO Myths on Proposify Bizchat Podcast

Among other SEO myths, Kyle discusses the importance of internal links, explaining how well prepared pages and internal links could help.

(Newswire.net -- October 19, 2017) -- Phoenix, Arizona - High Voltage co-founder and lead SEO, Kyle Roof, was recently invited to the Proposify BizChat podcast to discuss the reality and myths behind SEO best practices. Kyle unveiled the truth about key ranking factors, content penalties and the most up-to-date tactics, based on his vast testing experience as the face of the Search Intelligence Agency (S.I.A) and his work with clients at High Voltage SEO.

The key takeaways include not overthinking your content, or thinking you need to employ a high-level copywriter to write all your content, whether or not grammar and spelling are a ranking factor on Google, and the effect of much-discussed reading level optimization in the context of your rankings.

Additionally, Kyle went into some detail about the effect of HTML and CSS errors on SERP ranking, taking into account that not everyone can afford or have the expertise to do a full SEO audit.

"Most people aren't dealing with an unlimited budget, instead, there's just a certain amount of time and money you have to invest in your web projects, so it becomes more of a question of do you need to fix these errors. So we tested HTML, CSS, and pages with lots of errors to see if it's negative factor, and it's not."

Page load time, a commonly overlooked factor in SEO, is also something Kyle has tested extensively. His conclusions, explained in the podcast, ultimately show that page load time itself might not be a ranking factor, but that optimizing the speed of your page is still a very important step.

As commonly known in the industry, tags are a vital part of your SEO. Kyle goes one step further and talks about the value of implementing Schema into your page, as these help bots crawling your site to understand its contents.

His final point was on the importance of internal links, explaining how well prepared pages and internal links could help even small pages beat thin pages on big domains such as forbes.com, an exciting prospect for many who think those top ranking spots are out of their reach.

Click here to listen to the podcast and find out if you're losing time on SEO practices you could cut out or improve.

Essential SEO Strategies for E-Commerce Sites

Search engine optimization (SEO) may seem straightforward on the surface, but in practice, there are hundreds of interlocking pieces that must be monitored and adjusted in order to see positive results. The process is even more complicated for e-commerce sites, which operate under a unique set of circumstances and must adhere to a distinct set of best practices. All the fundamentals still apply: publishing great content, earning quality inbound links, and maintaining an ongoing social media campaign. But in addition to these, you'll need to pursue these specific e-commerce strategies.

    fregerwg

    1. Create Unique Product Descriptions For Every Product

This is extremely important. It's tempting to use a manufacturer's description for your products, or to repeat sections of content for similar products, but the best strategy is to create a completely unique description for each of your products. It's a lot of work up front, but duplicate content can severely hinder your campaign, and all that extra unique content will pay off immediately.

    2. Encourage User Reviews

Encourage your users to post reviews on each individual product page. Amazon executes this perfectly, so look at any product page on Amazon.com for a great example of how to implement user reviews. Google loves seeing unique, value-adding content, and with an e-commerce site, you have a key opportunity to generate free content from your user base. Plus, you'll boost sales by giving people more insight into the quality of the products you sell.

    3. Establish Easy Site Navigation

This is crucial for both attaining higher search engine rankings and improving your site's user experience. Organize your product pages as intuitively as possible, separating them into easily searchable and easily understandable categories. Make your site map obvious and easy to follow, and design your site in a way that pleases the eye and immediately directs users where to go.

    4. Optimize Your Site Load Times By Reducing The Size Of Your Images

It's important to have high-quality images on your product pages, but don't go overboard. Having too many high-quality images on one page can slow down your site, which is bad for SEO. Instead, reduce the size of your images, or build a feature that allows users to "zoom in" to see a larger version. This will keep your load speeds in check while still giving your users the quality they need to see.

    5. Link Between Pages Wherever Possible

Google prefers websites with value-adding internal linking. The fewer clicks a user has to make in order to get to any given page on your site, the better. Improve this by linking each page to several other similar, relevant pages in your domain.

    6. Optimize Your Site For Mobile

This is essential for any site, but especially an e-commerce platform, which would otherwise be nearly impossible to navigate. Give your users a smooth mobile experience, either through a responsive design, a specific mobile design, or an interactive app that allows for a better mobile experience. This will become increasingly important in the coming years.

    7. Integrate Your Product Pages With Social Sharing

In addition to basic social integration, your product pages should have social-share buttons so users can pass on information about your products with their friends and followers. This is a good business practice in general but it's particularly good for SEO because Google may use social signals as a measure of authority.

    8. Keep Your Out-Of-Stock And Discontinued Item Pages Up And Running

This might seem counterintuitive at first. After all, if you're no longer offering an item, why bother keeping the page up? It's worthwhile because it gives you more permanent pages, and a greater base of indexable content for Google bots to scour. All you need to do is add a headline or some other indication that the item is no longer available.

    9. Create Seasonal Categories To Maximize Seasonal Attention

Seasonal items tend to have lower keyword competition, with the trade-off being a shorter period of relevance. To get the most out of your seasonal items, create specific seasonal category pages such as "Halloween Decor" or "Best in Fashion 2014."

    10. Add A Community Forum And Encourage Growth

Another major content option for e-commerce platforms is a community forum where users can exchange information about their favorite products and make recommendations to one another. It will increase brand loyalty amongst your participants. Encourage community growth by starting conversations and responding to questions and complaints whenever possible.

    11. Include Pictures And Videos For Every Product

E-commerce platforms serve as a perfect medium for visual content, which is growing in importance for SEO. Include videos and several high-quality pictures for every product you offer, tagged with relevant metadata, so each image has a chance of showing up for a relevant image-based search. Just keep them stored in a way that doesn't interfere with site loading times.

    12. Make Your Site Secure

It's always been a best practice for e-commerce sites to have HTTPS encryption for user security. If you don't have it, get it now. In addition to providing an extra layer of user security, it also provides a significant ranking signal to Google.

    13. Build Deep Inbound Links

Link building for e-commerce website presents a significant opportunity: ample material for deep linking. When engaging in a link-building campaign, focus on attaining links to the deepest pages on your site that you can (such as niche product pages).

    14. Regularly Check Your Pages For Errors

E-commerce sites can grow unwieldy fast, since they usually have a huge (and growing) number of pages. Perform routine checks to make sure none of your permalinks are generating 404 errors, and that all of your links to external content are still functional. You can do this using Google Webmaster Tools and a site-crawling tool such as Screaming Frog.

    15. Build Relevantly Titled URLs

Every URL on your e-commerce platform should be unique, relevant to the page, and keyword optimized. If you're using an automated means of page creation, you might be left with a URL ending in a long series of numbers and letters–change these immediately. For example, if you're offering a large red umbrella on a specific product page, end your URL with /large-red-umbrella-v1 rather than /10031490314180.

    16. Use Catchy Meta Descriptions For Your Products

When a page appears on a search engine ranking page (SERP), the meta description appears as text under the hyperlink. Use this to your advantage by writing compelling copy for each of your products' meta descriptions. Your goal should be to immediately catch your user's attention, and draw him or her in.

    17. Optimize Your Site's Internal Search Functionality

It's important to realize that Google isn't the only search engine you need to be thinking about. If you want your users to keep shopping on your site, you need to build and refine an internal search function that can efficiently scour your site and provide the most relevant results to your users. This means building an algorithm that can handle misspellings, offer predictive searches, and sort through every page on the site. It also means optimizing your product titles and categories to be searchable both internally and externally.
