Google adds rich results for podcasts to SERPs

On its Developers blog, Google stealthily launched some new guidelines for structured data to bring rich results for podcasts to search results.

To date, this is only available via Google Home or the Google Search app v6.5 or higher on Android devices, but support for Chrome on Android is coming soon.

This was first noted over on Search Engine Roundtable, and Google provided an image to show how this will look in practice:

Podcasts can be indexed and embedded in results, which could be a particularly useful functionality for Google Home and smartphones.

The example above shows just how much SERP real estate can be occupied when this is implemented correctly. An embedded podcast player within the search results also means users won't even need to click through to a landing page to listen to an episode.

How can I get my podcasts indexed?

The first stage to achieving this is to get podcasts indexed, and Google has provided very clear and thorough guidelines on how to do this:

  • Expose a valid RSS feed describing the podcast that conforms to the RSS 2.0 specifications as well as the feed requirements described below.
  • The feed must contain at least one episode that conforms to the requirements given on this page.
  • The podcast must have a dedicated homepage with the elements described below. The homepage must have a <link> pointing to your RSS feed.
  • The homepage, the RSS feed, and any non-blocked audio files must be exposed to Googlebot; that is, they must not require a login, and must not be protected by robots.txt or <noindex> tags.
  • Adding structured data for podcasts

Structured data implementation can lead to increased SERP presence and click-through rate, but it also provides search engines with valuable guidance when they crawl your content.

The full list of required tags required within a podcast's RSS feed is provided in Google's post and it includes the following:

Tags must be added at both a podcast- and episode-level within the RSS feed in order to show up via rich results. This is an essential consideration and is one that will need a bit of extra time from developers on an ongoing basis.

We can surmise from these elements and the zebra podcast example provided by Google that the typical structure of a podcast listing will therefore look as follows:

Are brands taking advantage of this yet?

These are very early days for this feature, but I have conducted a number of searches via the Google Search app in the US for a range of podcasts and have yet to see this live.

However, Google has been quite surreptitious about this recent release, and it will take some time for brands to implement the requisite changes too.

Nonetheless, support for Chrome on Android is coming soon and presumably, other Google software and hardware will follow suit. That will provide quite a wide audience and any brand that releases podcasts will want to avail of this new opportunity to attract visits.

    In summary

Combined with its developments in voice search, mobile, and personalization, it makes strategic sense for Google to add podcasts to its rich results-enabled assets.

Data from Edison Research show the significant year-on-year growth for this medium in the US, with further increases expected in 2017:

Column graph showing the increase in monthly podcast listening from 2008 to 2016. It begins at 9% in 2008, and increased to 21% in 2016. The legend beneath it reads: % listening to a podcast in last month.

As such, it is worth paying attention to this now for any brand that produces podcasts – especially those that exist in a competitive niche.

It may take some time to implement the technical changes and see them go live but, as with all such industry updates, the early adopters will reap the greatest rewards.

Spotting a Hidden SEO Hack: “Play One”

SEO hacks continue to plague websites as attackers abuse SERP rankings for their own gain. The time and effort spent by the website owner creating content, optimizing pages and building links is stolen by an attacker in an instant.

For many years, spam injections placed inside legitimate pages have remained one of the most prevalent types of black hat SEO hacks that we encounter. In fact, SEO Spam made up over 30% of the malware families we saw while cleaning websites in the last year. Hackers are constantly inventing new tricks to make spam invisible to human visitors while remaining indexable by search engines. Black hat tactics like these are becoming more complex in order to avoid detection by the website owner.

In this post, we'll outline a simple evolution of tactics used by hackers to hide spam. These steps detail a specific case that we saw but can easily be used to identify similar attacks.

  •  With SEO hacks, the least complex trick is to put spam content inside a <div> with the display:none style. This is quite straightforward and easy to detect.
  •  A more complex evolution of the same idea is making the <div> invisible on page load using JavaScript code like this:
  • document.getElementById('spam-div-id'),style.display = 'none';
  • Even with this added complexity, it's still easy to see which <div> is being hidden with the above code. To distract from this, the next step in the obfuscation is a dynamic generation of the ID inside the code. We described this approach in the "Double Hidden Style" Labs Note a couple of years ago. Hackers use random "numeric" div IDs and mathematical expressions to generate them in the code:
  • <div id="232">...spammy content here...</div> <script>document.getElementById(116*2).style.display='none';</script>
  • The code still looks suspicious as it's clear that it makes something invisible. Now the attackers make the hack trickier to notice immediately. They improve the obfuscation – in addition to a more complex mathematical expression. Now instead of the suspicious "display" and "none" you can only see benign "play" and "one".
  • <script>(function(g,h,i,f){i.getElementById(f).style['dis'+g]='n'+h;})('play','one',document,214*102+105);</script>

The script remains short but it's difficult for webmasters to spot what it does at first glance. However, when you look at it more thoroughly, you can notice that it does exactly the same thing – it hides an HTML element with a "numeric" id:

    document.getElementById(214*102+105).style['display']='none';

This is just one line of the spam-hiding code evolution. There are many other approaches that hackers use to hide spam injections from human visitors while abusing the page's SEO. If you think you may be the victim of an attack, we are here to help you detect them and remove malware from your sites.

Best SEO Analysis Tools for Tracking Backlinks

    SEO_Analysis_Tools_Tracking_Backlinks

SEO analysis tools are powerful instruments in boosting your brand visibility among leads and current customers. One way they do this is through tracking backlinks that could either put your site pages at the top of the search engine result rankings where prospects can easily find you or bury your content amidst the competition.

    Why Track Backlinks?

Tracking backlinks has several benefits, from knowing how people have come to find your site and even helping you make decisions about the direction of your content.

See which content brings in the most traffic and revenue

Do you know which are the most popular pages of your site? They most likely got to the top because people are sharing them and linking to pages that use your targeted keywords as anchor text, or the highlighted/underlined text that indicate a link. Knowing which pages are your major drivers for traffic can shape your marketing plan for future content or prevent you from spending money on content that does not produce as many backlinks.

Remove spammy links that cause drops in traffic

What if your website has been growing in traffic consistently, but now you notice a sudden drop off in site visits? Spammy links could be the culprit for the decrease in where you are found on search engine result pages (SERPs). Google notoriously penalizes websites by downgrading them in the SERP rankings due to these common link violations in Google Webmaster Guidelines:

But you won't know which links are responsible for the decline in traffic without being able to effectively track backlinks. Or if you track links manually, you will have to comb through these individual sites, losing precious time and traffic. SEO analysis tools with a good built-in backlink tracker should help you avoid these issues so you can keep your SERP rankings high and ensure return on investment on quality content.

Best SEO Analysis Tools for Tracking Backlinks

There are plenty of reasons why you should monitor the influx of external links to your site on a regular basis, but which tools should you use?

Here are the five best SEO analysis tools for checking backlinks:

    1. Moz: Open Site Explorer

Moz is a favorite for SEO experts because it has paid and free tools to fit your needs and budget. The paid version, Moz Pro, has a link checker available for free called Open Site Explorer.

Simply enter a URL in the search bar. The results will show page link metrics, including new links and total number of links. You can also see the names of pages and URLs that bring a high number of traffic to your site as well as display a "Spam Score" that warns you if you are at risk for a ranking penalty.

    2. Ahrefs: Backlink Checker

Another frequently used tool is Backlink Checker from Ahrefs. While there are subscription plans available, you could sign up for a free trial to look up URLs and view positive or negative changes in the amount of backlinks, the number of referring domains and more.

    3. Majestic: Site Explorer

While it has a similar name to the Moz tool, the Site Explorer from Majestic has features that make it stand out, including unique metrics like Trust Flow (based on clicks given from trusted sites to a particular URL or domain) and Citation Flow (based on the number of citations to a URL or domain). Majestic also features graphics to easily read backlink metrics like the pie charts in the Backlink Breakdown and line graphs in the Backlink History section.

    4. SEM Rush: Backlinks

There is a subscription plan for SEM Rush, but you can use the Backlinks tool for free to analyze links that point to your site. However, you are limited to a certain number of free searches with SEM Rush tools.

Using the Backlinks tool, you can see the anchor text that accompany your page links to determine whether external sites are describing your site with your chosen keywords. In addition, there is an indicator of how authoritative a domain that links to your site is, letting you know the links you earn are from trusted sites, which tend to have higher traffic.

    5. Google: Analytics

For a completely free tool, choose Google Analytics to monitor your backlinks. If you have a syndication partnership to share content, the Referral Traffic section is an especially helpful feature of Google Analytics. You can see the names of URLs that bring traffic to your site, the number of visits and see how long visitors stayed on your page.

Whether you want to invest in backlink tracker via a paid subscription or use the free tools available, checking your backlinks is crucial.

12 Ways Video Can Improve SEO Search Rankings

    March 29, 2017

Use of videos on webpages has been rapidly increasing, and it's time to look at how to use it to for your SEO rankings.

Video content has increasingly become the norm across the Web and using it properly is important if you want to reach the top of search engine results. These SEO video tips can help get you on the top of the page ahead of everyone else.

    1. Worthwhile Content

It seems obvious, but yes, content needs relevance for the audience targeted. The video content shouldn't be an afterthought that was just thrown in. The content needs to compel them to want to watch the video. Quality videos will establish you as the go-to for your audience as you build trust and increase the sought-after conversations that attract more audience members.

    2. Make the Content Interactive

Use some of the many ways to make your videos interactive to get your viewers engaged. Grab their attention by adding interactive content to the annotation, caption or video itself. A successful strategy used by many has been to divide the video into shorter segments and let the audience choose which ones they want to watch. Three two-minute videos may be a much better choice than one longer six-minute video for your viewers.

    3. Your Domain Needs to Host the Video

It may seem easier to upload a video you create to YouTube, but the video needs to be on your domain. YouTube may expand your reach, but for SEO purposes, YouTube will be searched first, not your site.

Furthermore, any video that is not hosted on your domain runs the real risk that search engines will direct traffic to another site, which doesn't help improve your rankings. Each video should be on its own page to make it simpler for Google to index.

    4. Enable Embedding for Your Video

If your audience likes your video, let them embed it. Embedding it on their page can increase your SERP page rankings. Make it easy for them to embed it and increase your inbound links and visits to your site.

    5. The Metadata is a Key

Google says the important information for search engine indexing are the title, thumbnail and description. The title should be brief and to the point and the description can provide a little more detail and use key words for rankings.

But even more details are contained in the metadata and it's not the place to skimp on effort. It contains the title, video length and description and the file name. That file name is another way to label the video content for search engines, so make it useful, not the random file name assigned by your device like 'video_3345.'

    6. Clear Thumbnails

Just like the importance of the metadata, the thumbnail is a critical place of focus. It's what the user will see when they make the final decision to click on the video. Use a thumbnail that clearly shows the content and is a good representation of it.

    7. Keyword Optimization

Video SEO also has keyword research and should be used to find content to target your viewers. Experiment with creating legible descriptions of your content to help your audience and the all-important search engines for reaching your audience. Find keywords that best describe your video and discover ones that lead to better search results.

    8. Shareable Video Content

The video content needs to go beyond just being interactive; your audience needs to find value and appreciate it. Shareable content has several qualities. First, grainy videos aren't shareable, and videos need to be unique and creative. Quality content will stand out and generate mentions and links that will increase your sites authority.

    9. Include a Transcript of the Video

Posting videos increases the ways you can engage viewers and generate search engine results. Including a written transcript of the video can be useful for viewers who may want to see an overview first. And if it includes keywords, this will help get the right results from search engines if it is put in the description box and page HTML.

    10. Make a Video Sitemap

This can be overlooked in video SEO, but it serves as an extension of your overall sitemap and includes details to help the search engines obtain a good picture of your video content. It's another way to show the title, subject, description etc.… and more specific details such as expiration dates, platform restrictions, country restrictions, or live streams.

    11. Maximize Ways to Use Your Video

Use the video in more than one way to spread it around. A preview of the video could be placed on your Facebook page to lead the audience back to your webpage for more. Or, create a slideshow, shorter video or infographic to catch interest and lead back to your site and increase its page rankings.

    12. Use Social Media to Share it

Do not overlook the power of social media to boost your SEO efforts. Push your content as much as possible on relevant channels to spread the word about it and reach a wider audience.

More viewers means bigger traffic, new links and better positioning on SERPs.

Paid promotion is appropriate if it can help get your video in front of the right audience. Use your network as much as possible to promote it too.

    Conclusion

Video content is becoming the norm across the Web and should be used to increase your SEO rankings. Quality is the starting point, but there are many ways to apply search optimization for your videos.

Use the 12 tips discussed to take your quality video content to the next level and have your message noticed by search engines and viewers.

Five most interesting search marketing news stories of the week

Welcome to our weekly round-up of all the latest news and research from the world of search marketing and beyond.

This week, the mysterious "Google Posts" feature has made another return to the SERP, this time with GIFs and videos – could it be here to stay?

Plus, why marketers aren't investing in the hottest new technologies as much as you might think; and Google announces a new type of search product with "shortcuts in search", which could mean big changes for SEO and paid search.

Google Posts return – with GIFs and videos

Google launched its "Posts" initiative during the US presidential election last year to relatively little fanfare.

Dubbed an "experimental new podium", Google Posts has since come and gone from the SERP several times, each with as little explanation as the first. Now it has reappeared in searches for several US sports teams, including the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees – complete with GIFs and videos.

Clark Boyd took a look at the new incarnation of Google Posts this week and considered what Google could be seeking to accomplish with the feature.

Google's 'Beauty and the Beast' ad could be the future of paid voice search

Google sparked a small firestorm last week when reports surfaced that its intelligent assistant device Google Home had delivered what appeared to be an unsolicited advertisement to unsuspecting owners: a plug for the new 'Beauty and the Beast' live-action film.

Al Roberts took a look at the reactions to what Google denies was an ad, and considered whether this could potentially be the future of "voice PPC".

Google announces "shortcuts in search" – can it get users on board?

Google announced this week the launch of "shortcuts in search", a new means of discovering quick answers to information via a set of tappable shortcuts within its Android app.

But will this initiative take off, what will it mean for SEO, and how will Google manage to integrate paid ads into this new search experience? Clark Boyd examined the new feature on Search Engine Watch and considered how it could impact search rankings, what paid placements might look like, and whether Google can get users on board.

Despite the hype, most marketers not investing in hot new technologies

Fear of missing out, or FOMO, apparently isn't a concern for marketers when it comes to new marketing technologies.

According to a survey conducted as part of OnBrand Magazine's State of Branding Report 2017, marketers are well aware of the new technologies that are expected to be important to their brands in coming years, but the majority aren't rushing to invest in them before they're fully-baked.

Of the more than 550 marketing executives and brand managers OnBrand Magazine surveyed, 65% have no plans to invest in new technologies like 360-degree video, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), chatbots and beacons in 2017.

So why aren't marketers interested in these new technologies just yet? Al Roberts looked into the reasons why marketers are holding back from investing in newer innovations at the moment – and what it is they're spending their money on instead.

Google to wind down Site Search by the end of 2017

Search Engine Land reported this week on the news that Google is due to sunset its Site Search product by the end of 2017.

Google Site Search, as it says on the tin, is an internal site search product which is powered by Google's search technology, and is charged by monthly query volume.

Site owners who have been using Site Search up until now will be encouraged to move onto either Google's ad-powered Custom Search product, or its new Cloud Search.

Google told Search Engine Land in a statement:

We are winding down the Google Site Search product over the next year, but will provide customer and technical support through the duration of license agreements. For GSS users whose contract expires between April 1st and June 30th, 2017, we are providing a free 3-month extension with additional query volume to allow more time for them to implement the necessary changes to their site.

5 Ways Website Structure Can Affect SEO

There are times when we overcompensate for weak SEO by getting too much into keyword research. While keywords are undoubtedly important, there are certain physical elements which can determine the success of a search engine optimization campaign.

On scrutinizing further, we can consider website structure as one important SEO metric— mostly overlooked by even the bigger names in the industry. In this post, we will be talking about 5 specific ways how website structure can have an impact on Search Engine Optimization— regardless of the search engine. Although website structure often falls to wayside, it does have hard-hitting repercussions— especially if we are considering long-term SEO goals.

That said, before delving into the nooks and crannies of website structure we need to clearly understand the concepts and necessities of the same. While the structural aspect of a website largely differs from the concept of designing, it originally stresses upon how the pages for a specific website are interlinked in general. Be it organizing the same for Google's Spiders to crawl or for users to navigate seamlessly— website structure is of paramount importance when it comes to SEO campaigns.

Here are some of the SEO metrics which are affected:

    Understanding Site Crawlability

If we are looking to get rid of indexing issues— crawlability needs to be looked at— rather closely. It is known that if a robot comes across a dead end while crawling a website— the SEO gets impacted— negatively.

Site crawlability, in simpler terms, refers to the ability of a search engine or its robots to meander through the website— subpages and specific topics to be precise— mainly for completely understanding the website. The robots expect a properly constructed website to be able to cater to myriad user requirements— allowing them to navigate seamlessly from one page to the other.

When it comes to structuring the website, we must avoid dead ends— like pages which do not navigate anywhere. One way to improve site crawlability is to add internal links for every page. This in turn creates a bridge of sorts— offering related posts and breadcrumbs for the robots to look at and follow.

Some of the best examples of perfectly crawlable websites include streaming clients like 123movies, Hotstar, Netflix, Hulu and a few other recognizable ones. The best thing about these websites is that every page returns a new address or page— specifically within the same website. Streaming websites are therefore perfectly crawlable and enjoy the cream of indexing benefits.

    Attending to Internal Links

If a user visits any website— he or she must be able to navigate across the pages with ease. This is usually made possible via internal links. As an advice, a user must take a minimum of three clicks for landing on a select page. However, we must segregate and categorize the links accordingly without wrecking the stability of a website.

Internal linking has its set of advantages when it comes to search engine optimization:

  • Upon adding internal links, search engines can easily find related pages— via keyword-specific anchors.
  • This approach reduces the page depth.
  • Content access becomes way easier if the pages are interlinked— offering decent user experience (something which we would be talking about in the next section)
  • Lastly, when it comes to search engine result pages or SERPs— pages which are interlinked are given precedence, in terms of ranking benefits.
  • We have seen people linking back to content which is older— while drafting newer posts. The best approach, however, would be to close down the loop by doing the opposite as well i.e. linking back to newer pages by updating older pages. This way internal links complement each other.

    Valuing User Experience

In the era of RankBrain algorithm, user engagement and user experience are hugely important. This actually gives us enough reasons for valuing website structure, on the whole. We cannot expect visitors to stay on our page for longer periods if the website lacks quality, interlinks, proper navigation and a host of other important attributes.

A poorly structured website repels the visitor which will surely have massive negative impacts on an existing SEO strategy. In addition to that, there are several metrics associated with user experience against which Google evaluates the efficacy of a website. Be it the click through rate or the effective bounce rate— Google can easily understand whether users are finding a particular website useful or not. Time spent on a given website is also a great indication of the fact that visitors are resonating with the content.

If these statistics are in our favor, Google will surely consider the same while evaluating rankings for search results. In simpler words, we must look to do certain things for instantly enhancing the overall user experience. Firstly, we can align necessary click throughs based on expectations. The second step could be making information available in the best possible manner. Finally, it all pans down to the navigation which must be crisp and intuitive.

    Managing Duplicate Pages

Haven't we all heard about duplicate content and the catastrophic repercussions? There are times when the same piece of content gets uploaded twice on a website— mistakenly. This can actually pull a website down or rather get it penalized based on SERP metrics. Google's much-anticipated Search Console is one of the best possible tools for understanding the nefarious nature of duplicate content.

    Assessing URL Structure

Our URL has an underlining effect on the entire SEO campaign. The first aspect which needs to be taken care of is the existence or non-existence of extraneous characters— including the likes of #, @, % and a few more.

Having these characters in between the URL name reduces the overall focus on the existing keywords. In case, we need to use at least one or few of these characters— it is advisable to bring in dashes and underscores for highlighting a keyword phrase. This is turn is expected to improve SERP rankings.

The next important factor is the URL length. As mentioned, most of the successful streaming websites have smaller names which in turn makes it easier for users to pronounce or remember the same. If detailed reports are to be believed, the top 100 URLs have an average of 38 characters with the nominal limit being somewhere in the ballpark of 36 characters.

    The Wrap

A perfectly structured website is probably the first step towards a successful SEO campaign. If we are to segregate the process of website creation, conceptualization will surely preside over other acts. Once we are done with planning, each of the five mentioned strategies needs to be applied in a step pronged manner.

Trust me, there is also a lot more to website structure and content than just niche-specific keywords.

Pay Per Click or PPC Advertising Part - II

    Search Engine Optimization - SEO

Search engine optimization, or SEO as it is often referred, is the process of generating website visibility and traffic from unpaid, organic and natural search engine results. SEO employees a number of strategies, techniques and tactics to improve a website's search engine ranking. Improving the ranking of a website's search engine results page (commonly known as SERP) helps ensure that a website is visible and accessible by both search engines and internet searchers.

Generally speaking, the higher ranked a website on a search result page appears and the more frequently it appears, the more traffic it will receive from search engine users. Simply put, the higher the organic or natural search engine ranking for a website, the greater the chance the website will be visited by a user. Furthermore, most internet searchers will not click through page after page of search results, therefore ranking high on the first page is essential for increasing traffic to a site.

Search engine optimization, as an internet marketing strategy, focuses on how search engines determine their search results. All search engines, including Google and Bing, have search results where website pages are displayed and ranked based on what their specific search engine algorithm deems to be the most relevant to users based on the search terms entered. Search engine crawlers, armed with algorithms, use a number of different variables when crawling and ranking a site. SEO can even target the different types of search such as image search, local or map search and video search.

The process of optimizing a website for optimal search engine rankings involves a number of components however they are typically broken down into two main categories: on-site (or on-page) optimization and off-site (or off-page) optimization.

As you may have guessed, on-site optimization refers to all optimization that occurs on a website or page itself. Items like c reating, editing and generating new content (with a blog for example), optimizing page titles, site linking, HTML, alt tags, sitemaps, robots, meta data and coding can go a long way to increasing a websites relevance in relation to specific keywords.

Off-site optimization deals with all the SEO elements that take place off or away from a website. Items such as adding quality backlinks or inbound links and improving social media performance are off-site SEO tactics that can really make a difference especially for more competitive keywords.
